As one of those “students of Old English whose research had taken a turn towards the sagas and Old Norse”, I strongly recommend the local swimming pools in modern Iceland. Possibly the only cheap thing you can do in that country, other than making up stories and poems on long winter nights… And the pools are a good option in all seasons.
